People throng Bird Fair at JU


JU Live: “I have visited lake areas of the campus for seeing migratory birds. Really it was a mesmerizing view while birds hover on the sky. For the first time, I came here to enjoy Bird Fair. I am very happy to be here and will be a memorable day for me”, Yasir Yousuf, an official of a private farm who came along with his family to enjoy this fair, said blissfully.

Like Yasir Yousuf, thousands of people thronged here to witness the fair of migratory birds on Jahangirnagar University campus held on today.

A daylong Bird Fair-2019 was held on Jahangirnagar University (JU) campus today. Vice-Chancellor of the University Professor Farzana Islam inaugurated the event as chief guest at Zahir Raihan Auditorium premises about 10.30am.

Conducted by the professor of JU History department ATM Atikur Rahman, prominent ornithologist Dr. Enam Al Haque, founder of Birds Club of Bangladesh, and Rakibul Amin, country representative of International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), attended as special guests. Professor Md Kamrul Hasan of Zoology department was the convener of the fair.

Professor Farzana Islam said, “Birds and other wild animals have an indispensable role in the ecosystem of the environment as they protect the ecological balance. So, we should protect birds as well as other wild animals. If we want a bird-friendly environment, we all have to work together for the conservation of birds.’

Meanwhile, a total of 7 researchers and media reporters were awarded in different categories for the contribution in bird conservation.

After the inaugural session, different types of event such as inter-university bird identification competition, stall decoration competition, debate competition, bird painting competition for children, watching migratory birds in a different spot by telescope for children, quiz competition, discussion and a cultural session relating to birds held on the day-long fair. The visitors also were taken part in their related events in the fair.

Mentionable, JU Zoology department in collaboration with Wild Life Rescue Center, Bangladesh Bird Club, and Aronnok Foundation organized this fair since 2002 with a view to raising mass awareness about preserving birds.
