JU Live: The authorities of Jahangirnagar University (JU) have suspended its 17 students on the charge of sexual harassment and taking drugs on the campus. The decision was taken at the syndicate meeting on January 18, while Vice-chancellor Prof Farzana Islam was in the chair, said JU acting registrar Rahima Kaniz.
According to the official notification published on January 29, on the basis of sexual harassment and obscenity charge of 17 female students of Microbiology department against the male students of 45th batch male student of the same department and investigation report, JU authority suspended a total of 11 students of Microbiology department.
They are- Md Nayem-E-Akter, Ijaj Ahmed, Md Mehedi Hasan and Iqbal Hossain for one year, Md Sajib Hossain, Md Al-Amin Shoishab, Md Abu Nayem, and G M Tariqul Islam for six months, Md Shahriar Khan, Nahidul Islam, and Md Omar Faruq for three months. They are also asked to pay 5 thousand taka as penalty except for Nahidul Islam and Md Omar Faruq.
The syndicate also suspended Azgar Hossain Rabbi, a fourth-year student of Drama and Dramatics department, for three months for harassing a female student of the same department in a laboratory in 2017.
Two other students get written warnings for their involvement in the same incident.
Sazzad Hossain Sayem of Computer Science and Engineering and Moeen Uddin Jony of Bangla have been suspended for six months as they were caught red-handed while taking drugs in room 335 of AFM Kamaluddin Hall on August 11, 2017.
The authorities also issued written warnings to eight other students who were found involved in the same incident.
On the other hand, Md Ridwan Rashed Soyan and K M Mahid Hasan of Drama and Dramatics department, and Ahsanuzzaman Shawon of Marketing department have been suspended for short term. They all are the student of 47 batch under the academic session 2017-18.
