IUB Live: The fifth annual ‘GOBESHONA’ conference on climate change ended on Friday laying emphasis on domestic capacity building to tackle the adverse impacts of climate change on Bangladesh.
The International Center for Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD) of IUB organized the four-day conference at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) campus in Bashundhara, Dhaka.
Dr. Shamsul Alam, Senior Secretary and Member General Economics Division, Ministry of Planning, attended the program as Chief Guest. Prof. M. Omar Rahman, Vice Chancellor, IUB, Chaired the closing ceremony.
Mr. Ban Ki–moon, who was the eighth Secretary General of the United Nations sent one video message to this closing session of GOBESHONA that was displayed for the audience.
Dr. S.M. Munjurul Hannan Khan, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change; Dr. Saleemul Huq, Director, ICCCAD ; Dr. Atiq Rahman, Executive Director, Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies (BCAS); Mr. Barnabs Dickson; and Runa Khan, Executive Director, Friendship spoke on the occasion.
The Chief Guest of the Program Dr. Shamsul Alam, underscored that the government has given highest priority on environment and combating climate change issues. He also informed the session that Bangladesh is playing significant role in international arena to create a common platform that can handle climate change issues effectively and efficiently.
Prof. M. Omar Rahman appreciated the relentless efforts that the researchers have been making towards handling climate change issues. He highlighted the outcomes that “Gobeshona” has seized so far on environmental and climate change factors.
Dr. Saleemul Huq talked about carrying all agenda forward and implementing them with involvement of all stakeholders. He informed the audience that 26 sessions took place while, 69 research & 14 keynote papers and 4 videos were presented through the 4-day long conference.
A large number of participants from home and abroad, faculties and senior officers of IUB, students and development activists from different national and international NGOs were present in the closing ceremony.
It was declared that the 6th Annual GOBESHONA Conference will take place at IUB from January 8-11, 2020.
