Seminar on Environmental Problems held at IUB



Live Correspondent: A Seminar titled a�?Environmental Problems: Bangladesh & Global Perspectivesa�? held at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) on February 28, 2017 at its own campus in Bashundhara, Dhaka. The Department of Environmental Science of IUB organized the Seminar where Dr. Atiq Rahman, Executive Director, Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies was the Keynote Speaker. The program started with a short introduction of the noted environmental scientist Dr. Rahman given by Dr. Md. Abdul Khaleque, Dean of the School of Environmental Science and Management (SESM).

Thanking Dr. Rahman for enlightening the students and the faculties of IUB, Chief Guest Prof. M. Omar Rahman, Vice Chancellor of IUB said, a�?We must come up with new and smart ideas to stop carbon emission as well as climate change problems so that the planet can survive as the place of living for humanity.a�?

Discussing the major environmental issues in global as well as Bangladesh perspectives, in his Keynote presentation, Dr. Atiq Rahman outlined the ways of minimizing and solving the problems. a�?Development must be environmentally sound and socially justa�?, he recurred and a�?the Great Global Convergence in 2015 – SDGs, Sendai Framework on DRR and Paris Agreement- has paved the way for sustainable economic development for all the people around the worlda�?,

Dr. Rahman highlighted. As Bangladesh has led in fulfilling the MDGs, the same will happen in case of SDGs, he strongly said. Being the most vulnerable country for climate change, Bangladesh should take the lead in raising voice globally and at the same time, take initiatives locally for mitigation and adaptation to reduce the loss and damage of climate change induced extreme events and disasters,

Dr. Atiq Rahman emphasized.A� He underlined on localizing SDGs, integrating SDGs and FYP7, mainstreaming adaptation, conducting research on loss and damage, taking initiatives in fund mobilization and capacity building and learning from the vulnerable communities for facing climate change problems and ensuring sustainable development.
