Live Correspondent: A court in Narail on Tuesday denied bail to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in a case filed over her ‘derogatory remarks’ about the number of 1971 Liberation War martyrs.
Judge Sheikh Abdul Ahad of District and Sessions Judge Court passed the order after hearing the bail petition.
Earlier on May 30, the court set the date on Tuesday following the petition filed by BNP’s international affairs secretary Adv Masud Ahmed Talukder.
On July 25 last year, Khaleda was also summoned to appear before a court over the issue.
On December 21, 2015, the BNP chief at a discussion at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh in Dhaka had raised questions about the actual number of Liberation War martyrs, saying: “There are controversies over how many were martyred in the Liberation War. There are also many books and documents on the controversies.”
Reacting to her remarks, Raihan Farooque Imam of Naragati had filed the case with the Cognisance Court three days later.
